Shows: Sia

by Jennifer Murtha

Being a huge fan of Sia, I couldn’t wait for her show when it was announced back in the Spring. I’ve admired her voice since I heard it grace tracks like “Destiny” and “Distractions” on Zero 7′s Simple Things. Having the pleasure of seeing her play a tiny club in Kansas City back in 2007 I knew we were in for a treat.

I am always amazed at how such a big voice can come out from such a tiny person… This time was no different and she blew the audience away mixing songs from her more recent solo releases along with covers like “Oh Father” by Madonna. One of my favorite memories from the show in ’07 was how she talked and told stories to the audience. Continuing in the tradition we were treated jokes along with a story about her receiving a prosthetic leg as a gift from a fan and at one point even pointing out an obnoxious lady in the audience who was a bit too drunk and bothering the fans around her (delivered with kindness and humor of course).

Sad not to get to hear the Zero 7 songs that helped make her a household name or even anything off of her brilliant solo album Colour the Small One other than the now usual show closer “Breathe Me”, the show left me wanting more from the back catalog. Sure every artist needs to promote their new material but a lot of the fans are there from some of the older stuff. Don’t get me wrong, I like a lot of her newer songs but there is just something so magical about hearing those Zero 7 songs live even if Henry Binns and Sam Hardaker aren’t along to add the music. Contrary to that it was a great show and getting the chance to photograph her was a dream come true.

  1. I love your site! I am huge into music and shows and this is an awesome idea. I feature a band every Monday that gives back to the community. I found your blog when I was researching The Joy Formidable. I have never seen SIA live but I would love too. She rocks it! I am so glad I found this!
