Shows: The Boxer Rebellion

by Jennifer Murtha

Although it was a night full of shows at many venues around Austin, a large crowd packed into the Parish to see the amazing band the Boxer Rebellion. Putting out one of my favorite albums of 2011, The Cold Still, I was very pleased when they announced that they were playing and not during SXSW. Seeing them for the first time barely a year ago in Boston at the Brighton Music Hall, I was pumped for the chance to see them in an intimate venue again. Starting off with one of my favorites, Step Out of the Car, they immediately hit the ground running through a great mix of songs including No Harm, The Runner, Evacuate and If You Run from one of my favorite movies Going the Distance.

Forming around 2001 in London, they have remained a major Indie favorite despite being unsigned since 2007. Funding their own tours and albums, this super talented group not only remains true to their sound but are humble and amazingly grateful to their fans. The set was fantastic and seemed to go by so quickly even though it was almost 2 hours long. The band even stuck around after the show to sign anything, take photos and chat with people while selling merch. I’m always blown away with how amazing they sound live and the energy and emotion that goes into each song as it is played. Definitely one of my favorite bands to see and as it was when it was released, The Cold Still is once again in heavy rotation on my iPod.
